What does 'Quasi-commune' mean in the following sentence:

Charles Manson is an American criminal who led what became known as the Manson Family, a quasi-commune that arose in California in the late 1960s

A commune is when a bunch of like-minded folks (read:hippies) in the 60s would decide that they could survive off of their own skills and the land. So they would decide to live in a group and farm their own land and freely share the results of their group effort.

These usually didn't work because of human nature.

A quasi-commune would be sort of like that.

While they were living outside society, they weren't self-reliant as they obtained money criminally, so they weren't a genuine commune in that sense.
