Me and and my friend we both study English. We had a discussion whether it's a flask or canteen. Hope no hard feelings taken.

If you mean vocabulary, then yes both terms could be used but I cannot comment on what the military usage is.

I'd suggest "canteen." A flask is often used to refer to a container in which you store liquor, sometimes in some degree of secrecy.
