Even though I have looked them up in my dictionaries, I still don't understand their differences.

reward x award

Could you give me a brief explanation, just a rough one?

Thank you.

A reward can be a sum of money given to the finder of a lost dog or wallet.

An award is usually a trophy or certificate of achievement, like a degree, knighthood or Oscar.

Imagine you are at school and your teacher says to the whole class:
The one who finishes the test first will earn a reward (not award).

Imagine you work for a big company and one day your boss says to you:
I've decided to present you with a car as a reward (not award) for your hard work in the company.

:)

When you catch a criminal red-handed you get a reward, and when you get an award, you say 'Aw... I don't deserve it - it's awfully good of you'.
