To me 'safety' is more like a state of not being in danger while 'security' suggests actual protection, doing something to make you safe.

"Safety and security" is one of those phrases that people use whether the second item is redundant or not.

Like "aims and objectives" or "health and wellness". They're just often collocated.

... and ensure the safety and security of the ...

Why didn't you give us the full sentence? We could have given more helpful answers.

Thanks all.
I missed the source unfortunately, but I do hear safety and security mentioned together a lot, which really gives a sense there is a different between them.

nyota,
Building on what you have said, so can we say that security is something like protectiveness, while safety is the result of that.

Thanks.
