Denouncing is a rarely used word in my experience, but it has to do with reputation, social standing, or authority.

You might denounce your lying, cheating, thieving spouse within your social circle, but if you are telling the authorities about illegal activity, you are doing more than denouncing.

Career criminals don't deserve to be called a professional group.
