Hi all,

I'd like to know more about the latest methods for working on vocab books in EFL/ESL classes. Should the activities be done in class or assigned as homework? This seems to be a problem because most vocab books contextualise the items and this leaves a little time for extra activities, especially when the main book has to be covered during the term. (The classes consist of 8 to 10 learners.)

Thanks a lot in advance.

It is supposed to work as a supplementary source to expand the learners' vocabulary. I think one of the options is the Oxford 'Word Skills'. I wonder if teachers need to spend any determined time working on such books in class, and if they should, what the form of the activity would be like. I'd even be interested in any articles on this issue.

Thanks a lot!

I think one way you could do it would be to assign a reading task for homework that allows the students to see the new vocab in context, and then create an additional task for the classroom that gets them to use the new vocab in a different context to check their understanding.
