Smile Why do the English prefer fish and chips?

Hi,everyone!Merry Christmas! Hope you have a peaceful and prosperous new year!
I wonder why the English like fish and chips so much?My explanations are as follows:
First, the UK consists of islands and isles where fish is still a major source for people living there to eat, just like Japan.
Second, the climate in Uk can give potatoes a very comfortable environment to grow up and people there will have a good harvest.
So what do you think of? Thanks a lot, Sir/Madam. Eric from China.
