What does this sentence mean?

I hope we can part as friends.

Does it mean "I hope we can part in a friendly manner" or "I hope we are still friends are we part"?

I agree with BarbD. It's not so much the manner of the parting as how friendly they are when they part (which suggests that they will continue to be friends in the future).
