What does it mean to say that an item of clothing washes somebody out? Thank you very much!

A person's natural coloring (skin tone, hair, eyes, etc.) are complemented by some colors, while other colors have the opposite effect, making you look less attractive. If a color "washes you out" it makes you look pale and does not enhance your natural coloring.
