How do you pronounce this? "dəv" or "doʊv" or either?

127)The hawk dove at her.
dive-dove/dived-dived

We use 'dived' in British English. If we used 'dove', it would be pronounced /dəʊv/, to rhyme with 'clove', 'hove', 'rove', stove'.

Okay, I got it! /əʊv/ in 'clove', 'hove', 'rove', stove' would be the British way. so I think /doʊv/ is the American way.

I'm a native BrE speaker, and I was taught "dove" as the simple past of "to dive". I was told that "dived" was the American English version.

Would you explain this, please?

'Dove' is generally regarded as AmE; 'dived' is standard BrE. When ems, who (like most people) is younger than I, said that she had been taught the reverse at school, I was surprised. My post was an attempt to mimic the older generation who are always complaining about falling standards in society generally and education in particular.

I won't attempt to explain it all - it's really not worth it. Just put it down to my pathetic sense of humour raising its head again

I'm just flattered to be considered part of "the younger generation". At my age!

Don't get too excited. Anybody under about fifty is 'the younger generation' to me.

From your tone in your writings, you always seem under 30, younger than me! In Korea, age really matters, Korea is an age-oriented society.

That's because 5jj is young (and a softie ;-) ) at heart. :-D
Pshaw!

My gruff, grumpy exterior hides an even gruffer, grumpier inner man.
