[Vocabulary] cockpit VERSUS flight deck

Hi,
are the words 'cockpit' and 'flight deck' the same? I mean 'the room in a plane where the pilot sits to control the plane'.
If so, which one is more preferable?

When I used to fly small aircraft in the RAF many years ago, it was the cockpit. That was so small that we could not move around at all. We climbed in, strapped ourselves in, and that was that until we landed. I imagine that a flight deck allows some possibility of movement.

You'll have to wait for someone younger to confirm this.

I assume it's some politically correct thing. Like "stewardess" is now "flight attendant." There is an unpleasant syllable in "cockpit."
