How can I teach vocabulary such as "depend" to [STRIKE]starters[/STRIKE] beginners whose second language is English? [STRIKE]is their second language?[/STRIKE] We are not supposed to speak in our [STRIKE]1st[/STRIKE] native language in the class. [STRIKE]all our talks[/STRIKE] Everything we say must be in English.

Welcome to the forum.

How do you teach all the other vocabulary in your class? Are you specifically having trouble with the word "depend" or was that just an example?

Only speaking in the second language is quite common when teaching a foreign language. It stops both the teacher and the student from constantly falling back on their own language. Everyone needs to work harder.

Please look at my corrections to your post. It is very important to use correct written English on the forum so please follow the rules of written English:]

- Start every sentence with a capital letter.
- End every sentence with a single appropriate punctuation mark.
- Always capitalise the word "I".
- Always capitalise proper nouns (ie English, London, Prime Minister).
- Do not put a space after an opening quotation mark or before a closing quotation mark.

That seems too advanced a concept for beginners, in my view.

While teaching vocabulary to starters we use different ways:
1. You can show pictures or situations in pictures.
2. If the first way doesn't help, just use the method of miming.
3. Last of all comes the method of translating it into your first language.
You can do it in English using only one word in your native tongue.
e.g. you can say: the word depend means ......... in our native tongue...

This is really useful. Thank you so much!
