Hi,

I am new [STRIKE]in[/STRIKE] to teaching. I have a few doubts [STRIKE]in[/STRIKE] about the [STRIKE]grammar[/STRIKE] grammatical terms "subject" and "predicate". I would be really grateful to you if you can help me.

1. That is my uncle.

2. The large house over there is my [strike]grand father's[/strike] grandfather's.

3. I use the internet nearly [strike]everyday[/strike] every day.

4. Here is an announcement.

[STRIKE]And apart from this
I am sorry. ( what is sorry in this sentence a noun or adjective)
How quickly the holiday has passed (is this a statement sentence or an exclamatory sentence)[/STRIKE]

I have two additional questions:

In the sentence "I am sorry", is the word "sorry" a noun or an adjective?
Is the sentence "How quickly the holiday has passed" a statement sentence or an exclamatory sentence?

Thanks.

Please see my amendments to your post. If you are going to teach English, you must make sure that you are familiar with the basics first.

Hi Uteacher,

The subject is the thing that 'does' the verb. The predicate is anything following the subject (including verb phrases, prepositional phrases, noun phrases).

'Sorry' can be described as an adjectival complement.
Your second sentence is exclamatory (so it should really have an exclamation mark). If it were a statement the word order would be: The holiday has passed quickly.

Hope this helps,

Thanks,

Maria

"Sorry" can also be called a "predicate adjective".
