It depends what you mean by 'the hardest'.

'Sorry is the hardest word' Elton John sings.

To me, it's 'antidisestablishmentarianism'. ;-)

what is the hardest word in the english language
I think the most difficult words in the English language are as follows:

(a) The ones that have more than one spelling like, traveling (American English) and travelling (British English), which are spelled either way in Canada, and so I am never sure which spelling variation to use.

(b) Those -ie- and -ei- words like, believe and receive, because I can never seem to remember how they're spelled, and when you don't know how to spell a word correctly, you tend to choose another word, one that doesn't express exactly what you wanted to say.

c) Words that end in -able and -ible like, terrible and probable. Speakers pronounce the vowels 'a' and 'i' as schwa, a neutral vowel, which makes it difficult because the Roman alphabet doesn't have a letter for schwa, so I'm forever looking -able and -ible words up in my dictionary.

x-mas:

By the way, try, "What's the most difficult word in the English language?" ;-)

'Phthisis' is not an easy word to say or spell. ;-)

A word can only be hard to a person who's using it.

Regarding spelling receive and believe, my mom told me to just remember the name ALICE. L is followed by i in believe and c is followed by e in receive

PS: Oh, it seems quoting the message changes it. That's a general truth by the way :)
