Is there a name for a big piece of empty land like this?



Can I use barren or is that for an agricultural land?

I'd call that a patch/area of wasteland.

I'd just refer to them as 'weeds' in general. I can't make them out in any kind of detail to see if I can actually recognize what specific weeds they may be. I'm sure they have some local or regional name for the individual plants (on top of their scientific classification).

It looks like there might some threadbare patches of grass, but it's hard to see whether it's actually grass or some smaller type of weed. Certain grasses are considered weeds anyway.

There's nothing wrong with describing it as barren (adjective). It's a bit too small of an area to be referred to as a barren (noun). The noun form is usually pluralized anyway.

I think how you describe a piece of land depends on the attribute that is relevant :-

size - big or small (relative)
location - rural or urban
land use - agricultural/building
terrain - flat/undulating/hilly
condition - bare/overgrown/swampy
context - surrounding neighbours


I don't think there is a specific word to describe it.

Note my changes above. "Land" in this context is uncountable. It's countable when it's used to mean "country/nation".

It would depend on the legal status of the land- it could be agricultural, but it could be for development.
