Bud Caldwell is a ten year old boy from the book Bud not Buddy, a fiction novel by Christopher Paul Curtis. Though he models the behavior of a well seasoned adult, he also acts his own age. There are many examples of Bud acting both as a well-seasoned adult and as a child. One example is when Bud got hurt at his foster home. Unlike most kids, Bud is very polite, much like many adults. Another example is how Bud tends to lie and that is similar to a lot of kids. He knows how to get an adult to give him what he wants. This is because he uses reverse psychology. Like a lot of kids and adults Bud is very stubborn.
In some ways, Bud acted his age. Bud was acting like a child when he hurt himself believing in monsters. Because Bud believed Toddy, he hurt himself believing that the kid before him had died in that barn. Toddy made Bud believe that bugs had eaten the child before him and told him that there were vampire bats in the barn. When Mr.Amose locked Bud in the barn, Bud went to see if they were locked and hurt is hand on what he said were “Fish head guards”. Later Bud thought that the object hanging from the ceiling was a vampire bat, he hit it with a metal rake and soon painfully realized that it was a wasps nest. Later he decided to get revenge on the Amoses and poured water on Toddy’s pants.
Bud was a reasonably polite person and acted like a well seasoned adult. One example of Bud acting like a well seasoned adult is when he said “Yes mama ma`am”. This is when he was trying to act as another kid who’s name was Clarence so he could get food. He was being polite to a person that he didn’t know. That was polite because he could have just taken her food and not even thanked her for it. Though he took the other kids food, he was not bragging about it because he was being polite. Because he was being polite, he got more than he would have had if he was not being polite of thankful for what he got.

Like a lot of kids, Bud seems to lie a lot. An example of when Bud lied is when he told Lefty Lewis that he was from Grand Rapids and he had ran away when really he was from Flint Michigan. He told Lefty Lewis that he ran away from Mr.Calloway and that he needed to go back. Lefty Lewis said that he was in luck because he was going back to Grand Rapids after he picked something up in Flint. Then Bud had to go along with that lie because he said that when you made up a lie then you had to continue with that lie or it would be obvious.
A way that Bud acts like a kid is the fact that he knows how to get an adult to give him what he wants. Unlike most adults Bud told the person that he wants the opposite then he actually wants. This is because Bud said if you tell the person the opposite of what you want, then they will use reverse psychology to keep you from getting what you want. Bud used this trick when the Amoses asked him if he wanted to stay or not. He told them that he wanted to stay so instead of keeping him, they were going to send him back.
Bud is a very stubborn child.
Bud models the behavior of a well seasoned adult. He also acts his own his age. Bud can act both as an adult and a child. Most adults don’t try to run away but Bud ran away from the Amoses. That move was very childish. Bud is very polite, which is very much like a well seasoned adult because most kids aren't that polite. Bud tends to lie and that is like a lot of kids. Bud knows how to get an adult to give him what he wants, this is because he uses reverse psychology. He is very talented to be able to have two great personalities like he has in the book.
