In a story I'm writing, four friends are on a cross country road trip. On the first night of the trip, they visit a bar and get something to drink. Before drinking one of them says...

Guy: Cheers to a good trip.

Would it be natural to say this on the first night of the trip or is it something you say before, at the end of, or after the trip? And is the use of "cheers to..." before drinking natural in the US?

Thanks a lot.

No. "Cheers!" is used without any other embellishment.

What you want is "Here's to a good trip!"

No — that's not idiomatic, Topstudent.

I've heard "Cheers to that!" in BrE.
