1) Contrive: deliberately created rather than arising naturally or spontaneously.

2) People are motivated by self interest rather than acting for Honorable or unselfish reasons.

Could you please tell me in these two sentences why did we use verb with "ing"? We normally say "I would prefer to be rich than poor" or "I would prefer being rich than being poor". Is it possible to use verb with "ing" after "rather than"?
