Is it correct to use " No, I haven't." to answer the above question?

There was a similar written question in an exercise below.

The question: Have you ever seen a whale?
My kid wrote: No, I haven't seen a whale.

The teacher corrected: No, I have never seen a whale.

Are they both correct?
