Help needed - word ABROAD

Hi,

I'm a Polish student and I've got a huge problem. I'm working in the company creating a webside and I have to be sure of the meaning of the word "abroad". It of course means in foreign country, outside, not at home or beyond the borders but I'm not sure what does it mean for Americans? Does abroad also mean 'in another state'? E.g. when a girl from Texas is studing in New York can it be abroad or definitely not?

(1) Teacher Rover is 100% correct: one never refers to another

state as abroad. If you did, Americans would find that extremely

amusing. Extremely!!!

(2) You have asked a great question. Exactly what constitutes

abroad?

(3) For example, I live in a state near the United States of Mexico.

But no one would ever refer to Mexico as abroad. Never!!!

(3) According to my dictionary, a synonym is overseas.

(a) Thus, if I went to the Kingdom of Spain to study Spanish, I

would definitely be going abroad.

(b) But if I go to La Argentina to study, would that be abroad?

I do not have the confidence to answer that question.

As far as I'm concerned, it simply means visiting another country, regardless of that country's location. Having said that, I have spent most of my life in the UK and in order to get to another country, we have to go "overseas"!!

However, I live in Spain now, and if I told someone I was going on holiday and they asked if I was going abroad, I would say "Yes" as long as I was going somewhere that wasn't in Spain. I might only be going across the border to Portugal or France, for example, but I would consider that to be "abroad".
