I thought I was sitting far enough from the TV for the other person to not listen the sound of it but I was wrong. They heard it(over the phone).

You have misunderstood the meaning of listen to (if listen to is what you meant.Otherwise you must use hear rather than listen.) It means to pay attention or to try to hear. That has nothing to do with how far you are from the TV.
