2. It was not until the teacher told him that William was sure he had passed the exam.

Which one is correct?

Definitely the second one. However, I would phrase it differently, thus: "It was not until he heard it from the teacher that William was sure he had passed the exam."

Definitely the second one. However, I would phrase it differently, thus: "It was not until he heard it from the teacher that William was sure he had passed the exam."
So in any situation, it is "It was not until" not "It is not until".

Is is correct?
