Later that afternoon, they went for a stroll along the rocky beach. They stood on shore, gazing at the restless sea as waves crashed to the rocks with a loud whoosh, spraying their faces with frothing water.

In my opinion, saying they "crashed" suffices. "Crash" is a sound as well as an action.
