[h=3]University courses should be geared to the economic needs of society [/h]The number of fresh graduates out of work is higher than ever before and it is constantly rising. The reason for that must be that supply and demand do not meet on the job market. There are highly popular courses among youngsters, such as media communication and marketing, but there are not enough vacancies to be filled up in these fields. On the other hand, there is a serious lack of doctors and engineers in Hungary. It seems to be clear that universities should offer courses which meet the economic demand.
In Hungary, there is a trend that young people should have a degree and physical workers are not appreciated anymore by society. Because of this, when teenagers finish high school, almost all of them apply to a university. The only important thing for them is to go to a university, many times it does not even matter what they study.
The other characteristic of young people applying to university is that they choose the popular courses which are trending at the moment or courses that are easy to get into. 18-year-old teenagers often cannot decide about their future and later they drop out of university because they are not interested anymore. On the whole, we can say that young people do not consider what job opportunities they will have after graduation.
One year ago, the government tried to cut the support of courses which are not needed, based on economic purposes. The government realized that a change was needed in the offered university courses. However, students did not support this idea and there was also a student riot in Budapest. They thought that every student had to have the right to choose what to study.
All in all, it seems to be obvious that students do not consider economic needs when they choose a course and their decision is often based on trends. This means that universities should gear their courses to the economic needs in order to decrease the unemployment rate.
