This is a command:

Remove the custom background color for the toolbar.

or should I say?

Remove the custom background color set for the toolbar.

I'm talking about a color that was set previously, in the past, but now needs to be removed.

or Should I say the following instead?

Remove the custom background color set for the toolbar.

I'm talking about a color that was set previously , in the past, but now needs to be removed.
Please note my changes above.

Is the background colour to be changed to a different one or removed so that there is no background colour?

Is it an absolute certainty that someone will have previously set a background colour?

Yes, I did that myself.

If you're writing a standard set of instructions that can be used by anyone, I'd say "Remove any custom background colour from the toolbar".

I'm writing a log message after the action has been done. The message has to be in the present tense, though.

I open the configuration file, remove the option that sets the color, save the file and write a log so other people can see the reason I changed the file.

Remove any custom background colour from the toolbar

I think "any" works even though there is just one color defined that was removed.

Does this work?

Remove custom toolbar background color.

I'm not sure about the word order.

I'd use the following order:

Remove toolbar custom background colour.

I think if the default toolbar is without colour, "custom" is redundant.

See post #4. The OP said that they would definitely have previously customised it to have a colour.
