Usually the phrase is "take the lead", why does the writer use the verb "storm" in this sentence? What does it suggest?

Manchester City stormed into a three goal lead before half-time.

Sports writers like variety. Also, a three goal lead at halftime is a commanding lead. I think "stormed into a three goal lead" is just right.

I know I can say "take a three goal early lead". But what'is the idea behind the use "storm?"

It's just a way of saying they bowled over their opponents. They did more than take the lead. They scored three unanswered goals. That's big! (The word "storm" is used in that fashion quite often.)

They scored three goals and their opponents didn’t score any.
