“It has been one of my ambitions to be a television anchor,” says the New Delhi-based champion. “That I could do chess on television made it even more special."

What does “That I could do chess on television made it even more special.” mean in the above sentence?

If you add "The fact" before "that I" and read the sentence again, does it make more sense to you?

Actually I'm stuck at "do" in the sentence. Chess is played not done, so, I think "do" should be replaced by "play".

'Do' just about works here in the sense of 'present', 'perform'. This would probably, but not necessarily, involve playing.
