Dear all,

Let's say the sentence below is a Twitter message that was sent out when a big hurricane came.

"There are 78 harricane centers and 8 spacial medical centers across the City."

In the sentence above, does "a hurricane center" mean a place for evacuation?

Thank you!

Yes, though we usually refer to them as "hurricane shelters" or "evacuation centers." The US Hurricane Center is a government agency that forecasts, tracks and analyzes hurricanes and other tropical weather disturbances.

Dear all,

Let's say the sentence below is a Twitter message that was sent out when a big hurricane came (it would be a bit late if it was sent out when a hurricane came. It would be better to send it out when the warning is received that a hurricane is coming).

"There are 78 hurricane centers and 8 [STRIKE]spacial[/STRIKE] spacious medical centers across the City."

In the sentence above, does "a hurricane center" mean a place for evacuation?

Thank you!

OP

I would assume that it meant a shelter or evacuation place where people go for safety when a hurricane is on its way. When you said "Let's say the sentence below is a Twitter message" did you mean that it wasn't actually a message you saw on Twitter? Did you create the sentence yourself?

When I read "hurricane center" I initially thought "eye of the hurricane".

Hi emsrd2d,

When I was reading an article on Hurricane Irene that hit NYC a while ago, I saw the message in the article. So, it was a real Twitter message but I only saw it in a magazine article.
