Would you tell me please how you understand this bit? is there a mistake in it? It doesn't make much sense grammatically to me.

These changes in Russian strategy virtually ensure that Putin must be carefully watching the political status U.S. and Ukraine’s other sources of aid and feel that prolonging the war and the cost of aid will eventually deprive the Ukraine of enough aid to keep fighting.

It needs the words "in the" before "U.S.", and "feel" should be "feeling". It looks like the article hasn't been proofread.
I think it implies (must) feel.
A question - why do you think it's "in the" that is missing, not "of the"?

Yes, you could also say "must feel" instead of "feel". Just "feel" doesn't sound correct there.

I used "feeling" to match the tense of the word "watching" earlier in the sentence, and the words "must be" that occur earlier don't have to be repeated. If you want to keep "feel" as it is, you'd need to add "must" before it.

Those words seem to refers to the political situation within those countries.

"Of the" would imply the political status of each of those countries in relation to each other, and I don't think the writer means that.

If it were the political situation in U.S., that indeed would be clear. But what would political status in U.S. imply?

My reading is that the writer's used "status" to mean "situation" or "state of affairs". The word "status" can mean that, though it's more commonly used to mean "standing" or "position".

@güey Two things. One, it should be just "Ukraine" (no "the"). Two, how do I get a job proofreading that stuff? 😊
