What does "mediated" mean in the following passage? It is from the book Nationalizing Iran by Afshin Marashi, p. 81. Of course, the meaning of "mediate" is clear, but I think its meaning here is somehow different.
"Taqizadeh’s position on orientalism is revealing in a number of ways. Most important is his awareness of the politics of knowledge that orientalism represented. He seems to have had an intuitive understanding of the power relationship that mediated his position, as a consumer of orientalism, relative to that of European knowledge, the producer of orientalism."
