BROKEN PROMISES
Mining giant Rio Tinto made a high-profile pledge to improve the ecology of its ilmenite sites in Madagascar in cooperation with conservation scientists. Then its bottom line began to suffer

I don't quite understand the meaning of "its bottom line began to suffer" - the collocation of "bottom line" and "suffer" sounds unusual to me. A bottom line in morality, for example, you can properly use a chair or a table in a park, but you can't take it home; taking it home for your own exclusive use breaks the bottom line of morals.

But can you describe it as "your bottom line begins to suffer when you take public property home"? I don't know. The English is not familiar to me.

What does "its bottom line began to suffer" mean?

The "bottom line" is the final profit or loss of a company. Their "ecology" activities negatively impacted the profits of the company.
