Can you post the sentence/paragraph where you found "take its toll from"? I've never heard this.

"To take its toll on" means to have a tiring, negative or debilitating effect on someone.

"Working the nightshift for ten years has really taken its toll on my health."

i had seen this phrase in the sentence: "months after fending off feral cyclo drivers and cigarette vendors can take its toll from Saigon's expats."
hope you explain it for me!
