IMO, the fact of it being an attempt needs no further explanation. I mean, had he been successful, you would simply say "He committed suicide".

However, if you still want to phrase it in that way, I prefer #2.

The first one is a little strange to me. Because 'was met' implies that someone or something met him.
If I were you, I would say: "His attempt to commit suicide failed"
Your second sentence is correct.
