Yes, you're correct. The word "I" can put people off sometimes. Employers want to know what you can do for their company, not what you're doing for yourself at this moment or any given moment.
Also, making a request is gentler than simply telling someone what you are doing.
Please, accept ... - This sounds less self-centered than "I am.."
Try saying, "Your advertisement for .... in XXXXX interests me and I am applying for this position."
