It would be difficult to explain the 'why's' of prepositions. That's the thing about learning English, there are so many variants for different situations. I don't think there are rules for learning prepositions, it comes naturally through listening and reading.

Yes, that's right, we use "in" for months and "on" for days and dates.

Yes, that's right, we use "in" for months and "on" for days and dates.

And, as tedtmc has rightly learnt () "at" for holidays when a particular day is not specified: "ON Christmas day.... at Christmas".
