Was or were grammar help
Sentence: "There were/was some rumors that this could be an April fool or a prank"
My question/doubt: What would be the right verb in the above mentioned sentence was or were ? My own thinking is it should be were because word rumor is plural. But still I want to confirm it since I'm unsure or you can say in double minds.
Thanks

It is indeed "were" because rumors is plural. One extra little note, "rumors" is the American spelling. In British English, it is spelled "rumours". Always helps to know the alternative spellings.
