off-record
Dear Friends,
What does off-record mean? I have found 'off-the-record' in the dictionary but it does not bring me any closer to the meaning of:
Irony is an off-record strategy.

If something is off-record, it doesn't go onto official records.
"I'll tell you who shot the sheriff, but it's off-record. I don't want my name involved."
"Yes, the US uses torture to gain information. But it's off the record."
"What I'm telling you is off-record. If you tell anyone I told you, I'll deny ever having met you."
PS: I'm not why in what context irony would be off-record. Perhaps you could tell us?
