I have no idea what a "portable reamer" is, but there is a switch called a "dead man's handle" on trains etc. The driver has to touch the switch at regular intervals, basically to prove that they are still alive!

Re: deadman control
A portable reamer is a thing like an electrical hand drill. It is also used to work on holes. It is not used for drilling, however; rather it is used to fine-finish the drilled holes.

Right. So the deadman control is obviously some mechanism that stops the reamer working automatically when it's unattended. (Many power tools have two switches, one operated by each hand, so that the tool doesn't work unless both hands of the user are in control.)

***** NOT A TEACHER *****
(1) What a coincidence. This morning I read about how important a deadman control, death switch, etc. is.
(2) Yesterday the driver of a subway train in New York City died while driving his train. Because his hands no longer exerted any pressure on the control lever, the train automatically stopped and no passengers were hurt -- or killed.
