Such essay-type articles may be called human interest stories.
human interest stories = articles for everyone
human interest = presenting people and their problems, concerns, or achievements in a way that arouses interest or sympathy: a human-interest story.

I'd agree with you.
IMO, 'human interests' is a bit too general. It can mean anything under the sun. That's a broad coverage of the articles you mentioned which are basically about people and their lives.
How about 'lifestyle' articles?
