using verb patterns to complete sentences
Hi,
I would like to know more about verb patterns to complete sentences. In particular how and why we use them.
For exmaple:
1.We're looking forward to meet/to meeting Sarah at last.
I know the answer is to meeting, I would like to know why?
I think its essential for him to come/coming from the same background
again, the answer is I know, but do not know why?
Please help me to understand the structure of sentences, in particular the use of infinitives, gerunds etc..
Please break it down as simply as possible - this is a weak subject for me.
Thank You.

Re: using verb patterns to complete sentences
You need to understand somethng of the essential quality of the three forms.
1) to + infinitive (This has a less direct quality)
2) the bare infinitie or infinitive without 'to' (this is very direct. That's why it is used in the imperative forms for example
3) the -ing or continuous form. This stresses, not only the continuous nature of actions but also some other things too.
Usually the verb following another verb takes the form TO + INFINITIVE. But you should try to feel the properties of these three forms rather than learn al the exceptions by heart.

What you're asking about - the how and why of using different verb forms, etc. - is called syntax, or more generally, grammar.
It's a big topic.
The best place to start is the "verbs" chapter in a grammar book or a corresponding website.
