a variety
A sentence from an article that ran in the Harvard Law Review:
"Yet, there are a variety of relationships within our legal system that are relevant to statutory and constitutional interpretation."
Why "are" instead of "is"?
Thanks.

But the plural of "variety" is "varieties." Is "There is a variety of relationships...." wrong?
