Some say surf through net, which is even more metaphoric.

I would like to say that in BrE, I have never heard "surf through net".

It's a new area so usage may vary- you'll find surf on the net used sometimes, though the tendency seems to be to use no preposition. I actually don't hear the verb surf used that much nowadays either- I don't know whether other people hear it as much as before.

I agree that "surf" doesn't seem to be used as much these days. If someone asks me what I'm doing, I'm more likely to say "I'm on the net".
