(1) These little words are used a lot in English.

(2) The other poster has given you some good links.

(3) Here are some examples that MAY be helpful:

(a) Can you speak French? No, I can't/cannot.

(b) "Could" is the past form for "can":

I could not go to work yesterday because I was sick. ***

Could I sit here? (More courteous than "Can I sit here?")

(c) Teacher, may I leave the room? (permission) *** It may rain

later today. (strong possibility)

(d) It might rain today. (weak possibility)

(e) Tomorrow will be Tuesday. (future)

(f) "Would" is the past form for "will." It is often used in conditional

sentences:

If I had time (I do not), I would visit you.
