Default I stayed hidden; I couldn’t chance coming out. -> What does this mean??

I have two sentences I don't understand atm.

    1. I stayed hidden; I couldn't chance coming.

    2. I chanced upon this book.

Especially I don't get the meaning of 'chance' in these sentence.

    Cheers.

    Cheers.
In #1 it means "risk", "I couldn't risk coming out".
In #2 it means "I found the book by chance/unexpectedly".
