    Question The use of "tonight"

    Hello,

I work in translation, actually it's not my specialty, but as a part time job, I do this.... So I was wondering about the use of the adverb of time "tonight" should it be only with future tense, or it can also be used with the past tense.

I know this but I was wondering about the use of it in the sentences.

for example is it correct to say: tonight I went early to bed, but I couldn't sleep.

or it should only be in the future tense like : tonight, I'm going to the movies.

I went to bed early tonight, but I couldn't sleep.

Yes, this is possible as long as it was said sometime before midnight or in the early morning - depends on how one understands tonight.

This is similar to, I went dancing tonight or I went out to dinner tonight.

If you wrote, I told them yesterday that I would go to bed early tonight. The reference to tonight is still after the sun sets today.
or it should only be in the future tense like : tonight, I'm going to the movies.
I went to the movies tonight - I shall (will) go to the movies tonight.
