Which of the following sentences is grammatical or better?

From 1999 to 2002, when he was studying in xxx Schoo, I worked as his math teacher and class tutor.
From 1999 to 2002, he was studying in xxx Schoo, and I worked as his math teacher and class tutor.

I most respectfully suggest a few changes in both sentences:
When he was a student at Central High School from 1999 - 2002, I
was his math teacher and class tutor.
He was a student at Central High School from 1999 - 2002, and
I was his math teacher and class tutor.
I personally prefer the first sentence that I have suggested.
