Default in Sicily or on Sicily

Sicily is an island. Do we say "born in Sicily" or ''born on Sicily"?

Generally speaking, we are born, live, die, take holidays, etc on an island, so on Sicily is what most people would say.

However, if the name of the island is also the name of a country, then we can say in: in Malta.
