set much store by somebody/ something
Dear teachers,
Would you tell me whether I am right about my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentences?
I never set much store by rumors. (J. Galsworthy, “The Country House”)
All of the lovely things by which he had set great store… went for a song. (TH. Dreiser, “The Financier”)
My family sets a lot of store by their boy getting married. (A. Saxton, “The Great Midland”)
set much store by somebody/ something = set great store by somebody/ something = set a lot of somebody/something = think highly of somebody/ something, appreciate highly somebody/ something
Thanks for your efforts.
Regards,
V
