Re: down the middle of the road
Everyone has jumped on the word conservative in the political sense, but it could just mean a risk-averse person, someone who doesn't stray to far to any extreme, but stays solidly in the midst of the pack.
(While driving down the middle of the road with traffic is a bad idea, if you're the only one on the road, it's hard to fall off either side when you're squarely in the middle.)
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
