The following is a regular customer in Korean grammar books, but I don't think I have heard of "I asked a few questions of him" a lot. Is it just a grammar stuff or an old one?

It's correct, but you're right -- it's not used a lot.

"Ask of" is mostly used to express demands.

And usually demands for abstract things: 'I am not asking a lot of you, just give me a chance.' (To give an example on the more concrete side, you ask someone for a cup of sugar' you don't ask it of them.)
